Alcohol abuse is a multifaceted problem involving
many issues, processes and transactions. These include
societal, cultural and individual attitudes toward
alcohol use and abuse. Once addicted to alcohol, an
alcoholic virtually devotes every waking moment is
procuring the substance, using it, looking forward to
the next time, and feeling bad about the last time.
Alcoholics are likely to develop severe psychological
symptoms and physical consequences. Typical withdrawal
symptoms include heavy sweating, nausea, vomiting, hand
tremors, insomnia, rapid pulse, severe anxiety, and
hallucinations.

A
patient develops a pattern of alcohol abuse that is
less severe than dependence but still causes adverse
consequences, as manifested by one of the following:
(a) He uses the alcohol when it is physically
hazardous to do so.
(b) His alcohol use has gotten him into trouble with
the law.
(c) He is unable to function adequately at work,
school, or home because of the alcohol use.
(d) He keeps using alcohol despite its causing
serious problems with other people.
Alcohol is a toxic substance which, when used in
excess and over prolonged periods can seriously harm
the body.It damages the liver, the central nervous
system, the gut, the blood and the heart.
Many
clinical studies have reported in China that TCM’s
treatments helped alcoholics relieve and prevent the
withdrawal symptoms and made it easier for them to give
up alcohol. The treatment of alcohol abuse depends on
the specific problems it is causing and the stage of
illness, the patient’s motivation and environment.
This ailment,
according to TCM, has different syndromes. The treatment for
these syndromes using herbal medicine and acupuncture is shown

Syndrome (a)
Damp-heat retention in
the Liver and Gallbladder
This
causes irritability, sweating, insomnia, severe anxiety,
flushed and greasy face, constipation, bitter taste,
reddened tongue with yellow greasy coat and a rapid
pulse.
To treat byHerbal
medicine Therapeutic principle: Clear away heat and remove
dampness from Liver and Gallbladder.
Simple Prescription: Yinqiao Jiedu San twice a
day.

To treat by Acupuncture and
Moxibustion Therapeutic principle: Clear away heat and remove
dampness from Liver and Gallbladder by using points
mainly from the Gallbladder meridian of Foot Shaoyang
and Liver meridian of Foot Jueyin.
Prescription: Yanglingquan (GB 34), Yinlingquan
(SP 9), Xingjian (LR 2), Qimen (LR 14), Riyue (GB 24).
Syndrome (b) Heart and
Spleen deficiency
This
causes severe anxiety, frequent sorrow without any
obvious cause, heavy sweating, hand tremors,
hallucinations, palpitation (noticable or irregular
heartbeat), insomnia, decreased appetite, fatigue, thin
white tongue coating, and week pulse.
To treat by Herbal
medicine Therapeutic principle: Reinforce the Heart and
Spleen, nourish Blood and reinforce the Qi.
To treat by Acupuncture and
Moxibustion Therapeutic principle: Reinforce the Heart
and Spleen, nourish Blood and reinforce the Qi by using
points mainly from Ren Channel and the Bladder meridian
of Foot Taiyang.
Prescription: Xinshu (BL 15), Pishu (BL 20), Qihai
(RN 6), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Neiguan (PC 6).
Syndrome (c)
Stagnation of
Liver Qi
This
causes emotional depression, severe anxiety,
restlessness, stomachache, hand tremors, fullness in the
chest and distending pain in the hypochondrium,
abdominal distention, anorexia, nausea and vomiting,
thin greasy tongue coating, and week pulse.

regulate the Qi circulation.
To treat by Acupuncture and
Moxibustion Therapeutic principle: Soothe the Liver Qi
and regulate the Qi circulation by using points mainly

Generally speaking, Qigong is good for healing
effect of this specific ailment, however
individual results may vary. It improves the
flow of the qi and the circulation of the blood,
so you'll experience more energy, but, you won't
see/ feel any immediate effects, as with many
exercises and therapies, it takes a few weeks or
even months of practice before you'll see any
significant improvements.
