It is
a term referring to an abnormally long or heavy
menstrual flow, frequently accompanied by the passage of
large blood clots. It is caused by ovarian dysfunction.
This disease belongs to the category of ?beng lou?in
TCM.
a. Menstruation comes irregularly with heavy
bleeding and lasts even for a month in every cycle.
b. The blood can be bright or dark in color; sticky
or watery in quality, sometimes with clots,
fresh-stench.
c. Physical and gynecological examinations show the
fibroids (benign neoplasms of the uterus), anemia or
infections .
d. It is important to rule out pregnancy before
reaching a diagnosis.
This ailment,
according to TCM, has different syndromes. The treatment for
these syndromes using herbal medicine and acupuncture is shown
below.
Syndrome (a)
Heat in the Blood
Abnormal heavy bleeding with the blood being bright,
thick and sticky, accompanied with tidal fever, thin and
yellow fur of the tongue, thready and rapid pulse.
To treat byHerbal
medicine Therapeutic principle: Nourishing Yin, clearing
away heat and arresting bleeding to regulate
menstruation.
Prescription/Formula:
Dried rehmannia root 9g sheng di Scutellaria root 9g
huang qin Phellodendron bark 9g huang bai donkey-hide
gelatin 9g a jiao glossy privet fruit 12g niu zhen zi
motherwort 15g yi mu cao eclipta 12g han lian cao white
peony 9g bai shau Chinese yam 9g shan yao hairy vein
agrimony 30g xian he cao.
To treat by Acupuncture and
Moxibustion Therapeutic principle: By using acupuncture you
can nourish the Yin, clear the heat and arrest the
bleeding
Prescription/Formula: Ren6, Sp6, Lr1, Sp 10, Ki
5, Sp 9.
A heavy bleeding with dark clots, accompanied with
distending pain in the lower abdomen, dull -purple
tongue with white and thin fur, unsmooth pulse.
To treat by Herbal
medicine Therapeutic principle: promoting blood
circulation, removing blood stasis and arresting
bleeding to regulate menstruation.
Prescription/Formula:
Prepared rehmannia root 9g shou di Stri-fried white
peony root 9g chao bai shao Safflower 9g hong hua
Stir-fried trogopterus dung 9g chao wu ling zi
Stir-fried cat-tail pollen 9g chao pu huang Rubia root
12g qian cao Carbonized field thistle 9g xiao ji tan
Notoginseng powder 3g san qi fen Sichuan chinaberry 12g
chuan lian zi Nutgrass flatsedge rhizome 9g zhi xiang
fu.
To treat by Acupuncture and
Moxibustion
Therapeutic principle: To open the channels of
liver, gall bladder and to clear heat from spleen and
liver.
Irregular menstrual cycle, manifested as prolonged,
light-colored and thin blood. Shortness of breath,
fatigue, pale tongue with white fur, weak pulse.
To treat by Herbal
medicine Therapeutic principle: Homeostasis by
invigorating qi and enriching blood to regulate
menstruation.
Prescription/Formula:
Ginseng 6g ren seng astragalus root 15g huang qi bighead
atractylodes rhizome 12g bai zhu prepared remannia root
12g shou di cimicifuga rhizome 9g sheng ma Chinese yam
15g shan yao cuttle-bone 9g wu zei gu baked ginger 9g
pao jiang motherwort 15g yi mu cao.
To treat by Acupuncture and
Moxibustion Therapeutic principle: To tonify the Qi and
kidney -Yin by doing the channels of Ren, Foot-tai-yin
and shao-yin.
Prescription/Formula: Ren 4, Sp 6, Bl 23, Ki8,
Ren 6, Bl 20, St 25, St 36, Du4, Ki 7, Ki 2, Ki 10.
Generally speaking, Qigong is good for healing
effect of this specific ailment, however
individual results may vary. It improves the
flow of the qi and the circulation of the blood,
so you'll experience more energy, but, you won't
see/ feel any immediate effects, as with many
exercises and therapies, it takes a few weeks or
even months of practice before you'll see any
significant improvements.

(b) Medicated diet
1) One Black chicken, Wolfberry Fruit 15g,
Atractylodes Rhizome 15g, Field Thistle 10g, 2
liters of water.
Cook them as the soup for a week supply; twice a
day.
(c) Life style
1. Scratching should be avoided; during acute
onset, the affected part should not be bathed in
hot water.
2. Refrain from eating seafood, eggs, beef,
mutton, chicken and pungent food.
3. Alcohol and soft drinks should be avoided as
well.
