Blood
lipids (fat in blood) are composed of cholesterol,
triglyceride, phospholipid and free fatty acid.
Hyperlipidemia is the presence of excess fat in the
blood and it mainly implies the elevations of
cholesterol and triglyceride in the plasma and is
closely related to atherosclerosis (degenerative disease
of arteries with fatty deposition on inner walls leading
to blocked arteries). As blood lipids are transported in
the form of lipoprotein (fat with proteins),
hyperlipidemia also manifests as hyperlipoproteinemia.

(a) The diagnosis of this disease is based on
determination of the amount of cholesterol and
triglyceride in the plasma.
(b) Medical history and family history should be
explored. Inquire closely about positive family
history, diabetes, gout, hepatic diseases, nephrosis
and juvenile coronary heart disease.
Many
Hyperlipoproteinemia are successfully treated by TCM’s
treatment approach. Generally, it take about two or
three months to treat Hyperlipoproteinemia.
This ailment,
according to TCM, has different syndromes. The treatment for
these syndromes using herbal medicine and acupuncture is shown

Syndrome (a)
Deficiency of the
Liver-and Kidney-yin
Dizziness, tinnitus (ringing in ears), blurred vision,
irritability, amnesia (loss of partial or total memory),
lumbar (loin) soreness, red tongue with little fur, weak
pulse.

and Kidney-yin.
Syndrome (b)
Retention of
Damp-heat in the interior
Dizziness, a heavy head, headache, distention and
irritable feverish sensation in the chest, fatigue and
listlessness, bitter taste, dry throat, fat stature, or
dry stools, slightly red tongue with yellow and greasy
fur, and smooth pulse.
To treat by Herbal
medicine Therapeutic principle: Eliminating pathogenic
dampness and heat
Prescription/Formula: Modified Decoction of
Gentian for Purging Liver-fire Gentian root 6 g;
Plantain herb 12 g; Water-plantain tuber 15-30 g;
Bupleurum root 10 g; Oriental wormwood 15-30 g; Cassia
seed 30 g; Poria 15 g; Rhubarb root 3 g; Hawthorn fruit
18 g.
To treat by Acupuncture and
Moxibustion Prescription: Zhongwan (Ren 12), Zusanli (ST
36), Chize (LU 5), and FengLong (ST 40)
Obesity, dizziness, a heavy head, spitting of sputum, a
bitter taste in the mouth, a sticky sensation in the
mouth, stuffiness in the chest, or chest pain,
epigastric discomfort, numbness and heaviness in the
limbs, a purple tongue or a tongue with purple spots and
thick sticky coating, and a wiry rolling pulse.
To treat by Herbal
medicine Therapeutic principle: Resolve phlegm and remove
blood stasis.
Generally speaking, Qigong is good for healing
effect of this specific ailment, however
individual results may vary. It improves the
flow of the qi and the circulation of the blood,
so you'll experience more energy, but, you won't
see/ feel any immediate effects, as with many
exercises and therapies, it takes a few weeks or
even months of practice before you'll see any
significant improvements.

(b) Medicated diet
1) Take the lower stem of celery (about 10cm) 20
stalks, clean them and add 500ml water to them,
decoct until the quantity of water is reduced to
200ml. Drink it on an empty stomach.
2) Stir-fry or cook onion with seasoning. Eat
100g a day.
3) Hawthorn Fruit (Shanzha) 10g, Chrysanthemum
(Juhua) 10g, decoct them to make tea and drink
it every day.
(c) Life style
1) Eat more vegetable and fruit.
2) Avoid eating fatty meat, animal internal
organs, cuttlefis, eel, etc.
3) Eat less or avoid eating sweet food.
