Kidney stones are deposits of mineral or organic
substances formed in the kidney or the kidney tubes. The
size varies from little sand particles to the size of a
walnut.
Kidney stones: there is a dull pain in one
side of the low back, the pain radiates from the
loin to the groin. In some cases, there is hematuria
(blood in urine) or pus cells in the urine and the
patient may have fever. Ureteral calculus: There is an acute pain in
one side of the upper abdomen and the low back with
hematuria. The pain can radiate to the part above
iliac crest (most prominant bony part of the hip
bone) and external side of the abdomen or the thigh,
testicle and vulva region depending on the positions
of the stones. Vesical calculus: The pain is often severe at
the end of urination. Pain occurs in lower abdomen
and may radiate to the perineum (anal region). Other
symptoms are difficulty in starting urination and
hematuria at the end of urination, urgent and
frequent micturition. -- Urethral Calculus: Pain
during urination with difficulty in passing urine,
the stream of urine being poor and in the from of
scanty drops, or even retention (failure to pass
urine) may occur. X-ray examination: the majority of stones can
be found in the urogram. The laboratory tests: there are red blood
cells in the urine. If there is kidney damage, urea
nitrogen and creatinine tests will be remarkable.
