1. Overview and Causes
 

Migraines are severe, recurring headaches that are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and noise. Twice as many women as men have severe, disabling migraines. A susceptibility to migraines appears to be inherited. Sometimes they may affect the entire head, but most times they affect only one side of the head.

2. Symptoms
 

(a) Throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head
(b) Pain severe enough to disrupt normal routine
(c) Nausea, vomiting
(d) Sensitivity to light and sound
(e) Visual, olfactory (of the nose), or other sensory disturbances

3. TCM Effectiveness and Evaluation
 

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can lessen the severity of migraines, but it is difficult to cure it completely.

4. Common Syndromes and Treatments in TCM

This ailment, according to TCM, has different syndromes. The treatment for these syndromes using herbal medicine and acupuncture is shown below.
 

Most migraines can be regarded as being caused by liver-wind-fire. Severe pain in head suddenly occurs, and sometimes vomiting accompanies the pain.

To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: Herbal medicine can calm the liver to stop internal wind, clearing away pathogenic (disease producing) heat, and thereby relieving the pain.

Prescription/Formula: Gastrodia tuber (Tian Ma)9g, uncaria stem with hooks (Gou Teng)12g, chrysanthemum flower (Ju Hua)10g, chuanxiong (Chuan Xiong)10g, dahurian angelica root (Bai Zhi)10g, ligusticum root (Gao Ben)10g, chastetree fruit (Man Jing Zi)6g, gypsum (Shi Gao)30g, earthworm (Di Long)6g, scorpion (Quan Xie) 2g.

Simple Prescription: (E Bu Shi Cao)30g, dahurian angelica root (Bai Zhi)15g, borneol (Bing Pian) 1.2g. Ground these drugs into fine powder, applied to nose when migraines occur.
 

  

To treat by Acupuncture and Moxibustion
 

Therapeutic principle: Acupuncture or moxibustion can calm the liver and relieve the pain.

Prescription/Formula: Taiyang(Ertra 1), Waiguan(SJ 5), Xiaxi(G 44), Taichong(Liv 3), Neiguan(P 6), Hegu (LI 4), Fengchi (G 20).

5. Healing by Other Therapies

(a) Qigong and other therapies
 

For effect of Qigong on the Nervous System Function, click here.

Generally speaking, Qigong is good for healing effect of this specific ailment, however individual results may vary. It improves the flow of the qi and the circulation of the blood, so you'll experience more energy, but, you won't see/ feel any immediate effects, as with many exercises and therapies, it takes a few weeks or even months of practice before you'll see any significant improvements.

This information is for education purpose only. We strongly advise you seek a licensed Qigong master to learn the correct ways to conduct these exercises before attempting them.


(b) Medicated diet
1) Tall Gastrodia Tuber (Tianma) 2g, chicken 20g, rice for one person's meal, some bamboo shoot and carrots, 1 mushroom, 1 small taro, Green Pea 20g, some soy sauce and wine.
Put the Tall Gastrodia Tube into a bowl of water and soak it for an hour. Cut the chicken, bamboo shoot and carrots into small pieces. Soak the mushroom in the water and clean it, then cut it into pieces. Cut the taro into pieces and clean them, then put everything (including the Tall Gastrodia Tuber and the water in which it has been soaked) into the pot with rice, add the same amount of water as used for regular cooking of rice, and add some soy sauce and wine into it. Cook it until it is done. Take this kind of rice frequently to get better results.

(c) Life style
1) Don't have any beverage with caffeine or alcohol. Don't smoke.
2) Never take any spicy and pungent food or any food with strong fishy smell.
3) Take less ham or chocolate.
4) Have more fish and ginger.
5) Avoid depression, overtiredness and overexcitement.
