4. Common Syndromes and Treatments in TCM

This ailment, according to TCM, has different syndromes. The treatment for these syndromes using herbal medicine and acupuncture is shown below.

Syndrome (a)
Damp-Heat in the Liver and Gallbladder

Alternate attacks of fever and chills, fullness and discomfort in the chest and hypochondrium, of pain in the hypochondrium which refers to the back, no appetite for greasy food, dark yellow urine or jaundice, abdominal distension, constipation, yellow greasy tongue coating, and taut slippery pulse.

To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: Soothing the liver to regulate the gallbladder, clearing Fu to purge Heat.

Prescription/Formula: Bupleurum Root(Chaihu) 15g, Chinese Angelica Root(Danggui) 15g, White Peony Root(Baishaoyao) 15g, White atractylodes rhizome(Baizhu) 15g, Poria (Fuling)9g, Red Sage Root(Danshen) 15g, Chicken’s Gizzard-Skin(Jineijin) 9g, Blimbing fern spore (Haijinsa)15g, Licorice root(Gancao) 6g.

Syndrome (b)
Stagnation of the Liver-Qi and Weakness of the Spleen

Poor appetite, abdominal distension, vague pain in the hypochondrium, lassitude, acratia, thin and loose stools, enlarged and light-red tongue with toothmark, and deep slow pulse.

To treat by Herbal medicine
Therapeutic principle: Invigorating the spleen-Qi, soothing the Liver and regulating the gallbladder

Prescription/Formula: Bupleurum Root(Chaihu) 15g, Dangshen 15g Chinese Angelica Root(Danggui) 15g, White Peony Root(Baishaoyao) 15g, White atractylodes rhizome(Baizhu) 15g, Poria (Fuling)9g, Red Sage Root(Danshen) 15g, Chicken’s Gizzard-Skin(Jineijin) 9g, Blimbing fern spore (Haijinsa)30g, Licorice root(Gancao) 6g.

Simple Prescription: Rhubarb(Dahuang)15g, make 300ml decoction, drink once a day for a week.

5. Healing by Other Therapies

(a) Qigong and other therapies

Generally speaking, Qigong is good for healing effect of this specific ailment, however individual results may vary. It improves the flow of the qi and the circulation of the blood, so you'll experience more energy, but, you won't see/ feel any immediate effects, as with many exercises and therapies, it takes a few weeks or even months of practice before you'll see any significant improvements.

(b) Medicated diet
1. Wolfberry Fruit (Gouqizi) 20g, Hawthorn Fruit (Shanza) 20g, Chicken's gizzard skin (Jineijin) 10g, rice 60g, put 4 cups of water then soak for 20 minutes, boil for 30 minutes to make rice gruel, eat once a day for two months.
2. Chinese angelica (Danggui) 20g, Mulberry (Sangshenzi) 15g, Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) 10g, lean pork 100g, with 4 cups of water to decoct 1-2 cups of soup to drink twice a week for two months.

(c) Life style
1. Avoid mental stress and overstrain.
2. Don't eat raw, cold, or deep-fried food.
3. Take regular meals on time, avoid excessive food and/or drink at one meal.
