Overweight or "obesity"refers to excessive adipose
(fat) tissues in the body, caused by the calorie intake
exceeding the normal calorie requirement. This occurs
when a person eats more food than is necessary to
produce the required energy for each days' activity.
Obesity is either self-inflicted (caused by over-eating)
or it could be familial (runs in the family). Obesity
basically damages vital organs of the body and also
afects the appearance of an individual, therefore,
causing emotional disturbances as well. Generally
speaking, the diagnosis of obesity may be made by the
body weight which exceeds the standard body weight by
20%.
TCM treatment is effective in reducing obesity and making
the person stick to a low-calorie diet and exercise
daily. TCM treatment has a less side effects and it is
convenient and economic.
This ailment,
according to TCM, has different syndromes. The treatment for
these syndromes using herbal medicine and acupuncture is shown
below.
Obesity, listlessness, sleepiness, lassitude, shortness
of breath, edema (swelling) of the lower limbs (legs),
irregular menstruation, constipation, pale and enlarged
tongue with white and greasy coating, deep and taut
pulse.
To treat byHerbal
medicine Prescription/Formula: Guizhi 8g, Zexie 15g,
Fuling 15g, Zhuling 12g, Yiyiren 15g, Huangqi 10g,
Cheqianzi 10g. Dissolve them in hot water and drink
daily for 30-50 days
To treat by Acupuncture and
Moxibustion (a) Body Acupuncture
Method: Use the filiform needles to puncture the
points with the even movement method. Take the treatment
once daily.
Prescription: Zusanli (S 36), Tianshu (S 25),
Sanyinjiao (Sp 6), Zhongwan (Ren 12), Pishu (B 20),
Weishu (B21) and Fenglong (S40).
(b) Ear Acupuncture Method: Select 3-5 points for each treatment.
Give a moderate or strong stimulation and retain the
needles for 30 minutes. Take the treatment once daily.
The auricular-seed-Pressing therapy may also be used.
Take the treatment once every 3-5 days. Seven treatments
make up a course.
Prescription: Pt. Shenmen, Pt. Stomach, Pt. Large
Intestine, Pt. Spleen, Pt. Mouth, Pt. Endocrine and Pt.
Gallbladder (Pancreas).
Generally speaking, Qigong is good for healing
effect of this specific ailment, however
individual results may vary. It improves the
flow of the qi and the circulation of the blood,
so you'll experience more energy, but, you won't
see/ feel any immediate effects, as with many
exercises and therapies, it takes a few weeks or
even months of practice before you'll see any
significant improvements.

(b) Medicated diet
1) Put Lotus Leaf (Heye) 10g, Green Tea (Luca)
10g into a pot with appropriate quantity of
water to boil it for an hour. Drink the tea
anytime when feeling thirsty.
2) Green Tea 10g, Fleeceflower Root
(Heshouwu)10g, Rhizome (Zexie) 10g, Danshen Root
(Danshen) 10g.
Put them into a pot with appropriate quantity of
water, boil it for 15 minutes, get the soup and
remove the dregs. Take the soup as tea.
(c) Life style 1. Follow the schedule to take food 3
times each day, limit the amount of food to
take.
2. Control the amount of sweet food and drink.
3. Don't take too much food in holidays and
vacation.
4. Do more exercise as you can, like taking a
walk, swimming.
5. Consulting with the doctors and dietitians.
